Disposables vs. Cartridge Devices vs. Tanks: Which Empty Vape Format Fits Your Brand?

28 May 20264 min read

Choosing the right empty hardware is the first real decision when you build a vape line, and it shapes your price point, your margin and how customers experience your oil. There are three formats worth knowing.

Empty all-in-one disposables are the simplest: a sealed device with a built-in battery and tank that the customer uses until it’s done. They’re the fastest way to launch, the easiest to merchandise, and the most familiar to buyers. Because the battery ships with every unit, the per-piece cost is higher, but the convenience sells itself — especially for sample SKUs and entry-level retail.

Cartridge devices look almost identical from the outside but split the system in two: a reusable battery and a swappable pod. Customers keep the device and replace only the cartridge, which lowers long-term cost and waste. This format rewards repeat buyers and works well when you want a “starter device plus refills” model.

Tanks and box-style refillables sit at the premium end. They carry a larger battery, a more substantial build, and often independent airflow for bigger draws. They cost more per unit but let you anchor a flagship SKU and a higher price point. Many brands run all three: a disposable for impulse buys, a cartridge system for loyal customers, and a tank as the halo product. Whichever you pick, start with a low MOQ, test your oil’s viscosity against the coil, and scale the winners.
